History of the Diamond Ring

The journey of the diamond ring is as fascinating as its shimmer. From the first well-documented case in 1477, when Emperor Maximilian I betrothed Mary of Burgundy, the diamond ring has been a symbol of love and commitment. This act set the trend for the higher and wealthier social classes to give diamond rings to their loved ones.

De Beers and the Marketing of the Diamond Ring

After World War II and during the Great Depression, the demand for diamond rings dropped significantly. It was during this period that De Beers launched its pioneering marketing campaign.

The campaign, which started in 1938, educated the public about the four Cs of diamonds (Cut, Carat, Color, and Clarity) and introduced the timeless slogan 'a diamond is forever'. This approach highlighted the diamond ring as a necessary part of the engagement, cementing the diamond's status as the ultimate symbol of eternal love.

Diamond rings in different cultures

Diamond rings are worn differently around the world. In Sweden, Finland, the UK and the US, engagement rings are worn on the ring finger of the left hand. In contrast, in Denmark and Germany they are worn on the ring finger of the right hand. In addition, it is common in countries such as Sweden, Norway and Denmark for both parties in the relationship to wear an engagement ring.

The nature of diamonds: The Four C's

The value and beauty of diamonds are judged by the four C's - Cut, Carat, Color, and Clarity. These characteristics are crucial in determining the quality and price of a diamond ring.

1. cut (grinding)

The cut determines how well diamonds reflect light, which directly affects their brilliance. A well-cut diamond catches the light and reflects it spectacularly.

2. carat (Karat)

Carats indicate the weight of diamonds. Larger diamonds are more rare and therefore more expensive, but it is important to remember that size is not always the only thing that matters.

3. Color

The color of a diamond can vary from colorless to yellowish. The less color, the more valuable the diamond is considered to be.

4. clarity

Clarity refers to any defects or inclusions in the diamond. A diamond that is almost free of defects is extremely valuable.

Modern Trends in Diamond Rings

In today's world, diamond rings are not only a symbol of engagement, but also an expression of individual style and taste. Trends have shifted from traditional designs to more unique and personalized rings. A growing interest in ethically sourced and sustainably produced diamonds has also emerged. In addition, customizable rings, where customers can choose specific diamonds and designs, have become increasingly popular.
